As companies continue to web-enable their business systems, the need for Web specialists remains strong. To address this ever-growing demand, we offer the comprehensive Web Design Extension Certificate providing training in the most commonly used software and technologies in web design.

Special offer available during Fall and Winter semesters - Take the Publishing and Web Design Extension Certificates at the same time and save!* Please call the Program Coordinator at 403.440.6658 to discuss how you can apply any courses you may already have taken at Mount Royal University.  Illustrator for Print and Web and Acrobat for Print and Web are common to both programs and the weekday classes are scheduled so that you may take both programs at once.

Requirements
Strong computer and file management skills. You should be a current Internet user. Previous work with or a strong interest in Web design is required. Although you do not need the software, you must have access to an up-to-date computer for occasional out-of-class work including access to the Internet, use of CD-ROMs, student practice files, assignments, etc.

Earning Your Extension Certificate
Complete the 12 required (270 hours) courses listed in the schedule above with a minimum of 75% attendance, successful completion of all classroom assignments and exercises, and a minimum grade of 65% on a final project.

Career Outlook
Successful completion of the Web Design Extension Certificate may qualify you for an entry-level position with web design responsibilities.

Required Courses

HTML/XHTML
Create websites with basic tags and advance to HTML/XHTML. Incorporate backgrounds and colours, as well as graphics, hyperlinks, frames and style sheets. Use cascading style sheets (CSS) and explore browser workarounds and sound development. Identify style sheets, customize styles and apply positioning properties. Make your page interactive with mouse-overs and forms and add Flash and Java.
Note: We strongly recommend that you have a familiarity with Windows file management and the Internet before taking this course.

Photoshop, Level 1 - Web Design
Harness the power of Adobe Photoshop to create web-ready images as you integrate Adobe Fireworks to accelerate workflow. Select tools to manipulate colour, image size and resolution. Restore old and damaged images, add and manipulate text layers, apply masks, filters and channels, and make composite images – then export to appropriate file types for the web.

Illustrator for Print & Web
Produce electronic graphic images, manipulate text and more. Enhance projects, comprehend terminology and prepare for production as you discover the functions of Illustrator. Know how and when to use the tools, layering, filtering and colour for expert effects. Address typographical issues with various fonts.

Adobe Flash, Level 1
Using award-winning Adobe Flash, begin to add dazzling animation and multimedia to your Web page. Explore the fundamentals of animation and gain skills for designing interactive user interfaces. Techniques for advanced effects such as transparency are shown, as well as the opportunities offered by dynamic design.

Adobe Dreamweaver
Using award-winning Adobe Dreamweaver, create a professional-looking Web page using pristine HTML. With this visual Web page layout tool, also explore production techniques that save time while you gain skills in Dynamic HTML and JavaScript.

Adobe Acrobat for Print & Web
Learn to create, modify and apply interactively to electronic portable document formats (PDF) using Adobe Acrobat Pro.  Gain familiarity with the Acrobat workspace and how it integrates in the CS workflow including the Distiller JobOption compression engine, forms, security and web capture.  Modify PDFs with Illustrator and Photoshop editors, examine pre-press and print production standards, and embed multimedia in completed PDF files.

Introduction to JavaScript
Get a hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of JavaScript as a web programming language. Create web page interactivity using JavaScript with text and graphics. Apply many techniques including pop-up windows, image rollovers, slide shows, navigation menus and date functions. Enhance web page interactivity, speed and usability using AJAX web development techniques.
Note: We strongly recommend that you have a familiarity with Windows file management and HTML coding before taking this course.

Cascading Style Sheets
Add dynamic content to your web pages quickly and easily with cascading style sheets, reducing the hours spent generating HTML code. In minutes, a style sheet can be written that controls every element in every page of your website. CSS enables you to change those properties with a simple click and few key strokes.

Web Design Fundamentals
This course combines theory with hands-on practice to illustrate the principles of information design and their application to the Internet. Discover the fundamentals of interface design, information architecture, and the do’s and don’ts of Web page layout to create a professional-looking site that attracts repeat visits.

Video Editing for the Web Using Premiere Elements
Adobe Premiere Elements helps you easily capture video to your computer, edit it, add titles, music, narration and special effects and then output a finished movie to videotape, DVD and the Web. Premiere Elements is a powerful, low-cost software solution for small business owners and video enthusiasts who want to edit and output high-quality programs.

Web Programming and Projects
The Web is a constantly changing environment, with new technologies and standards being established regularly. Adapt to these changes and cross-browser issues using JavaScript. Explore the use of Cascading Style Sheets for easier site-wide formatting and design. Be introduced to Podcasts and setting up a RSS Podcast feed.

Web Design: Final Project
This final, graded course is a culmination of the previous course work in the Web Design Certificate program. Solidify your knowledge of all the steps involved in creating a Web page from start to finish. Gain an appreciation of the challenges and their solutions involved in designing a professional website.
